Building invisible tools
An article about the difference between products who say they care about customers, and those who really do. A story of a Prevue support request:
“It's 11pm on a Monday, and I'm getting ready to finish up for the night when I get an email from a Prevue customer — they're having an issue with making a credit card payment. It reads something like "help. can't make payment." — a fairly vague support request, but not at all uncommon....”
The art of suggestion
As a user, choosing account URLs is hard — like myname.app.com, especially when your usual names are already taken. Sometimes the choice is even enough to deter users from signing up at all — which is why a lot of services, Prevue included, are moving towards auto-creating a random URL on behalf of the user, then allowing them to change it later if necessary.
God is in the details
It applied to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe when he was designing buildings in the mid 1900's, and it remains true in product design today. Though I don't profess to know much about architecture, another likely commonality with product design is that it's those same details that are the easiest to forget. But it's those little things, the tiny minutia of detail, that ultimately make beautiful products, and beautiful houses.
